I Project Introduction

1. Brief Introduction of The College

The discipline of Materials Science and Engineering in Tongji University is one of the first doctoral disciplines established by the state in 1981. In 1987, inorganic nonmetallic materials were included in the first national key disciplines. In 2000, it became a PhD authorization point for the first class of materials science and engineering, and was allowed to set up a post-doctoral station for materials science and Engineering in the same year. In 1997 materials Science was included in the Ministry of education "211 Project" key construction disciplines, in 2002 included in the "985 Project" key construction disciplines, in 2010 included in the Ministry of education "specialty" discipline construction, in 2011 included in the Ministry of education of "excellent engineer education training plan" the implementation major, and enter the international academic world's top ESI 1%. This subject has "advanced civil engineering materials in Ministry of education Key Laboratory ", "Shanghai Key Laboratory for application and development of metal functional materials" and "Shanghai powder metallurgy Automotive Material Industry Technology Engineering Center". The discipline has established cooperation with the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, Spain and other more than 10 countries and regions, such as the joint training of scientific research and graduate students.

2. Training Objectives

The College of Materials Science and Engineering aims at developing research elites in materials with global perspectives, who will be dedicated to contribute to social sustainable development.

The applicant of this program is limited to overseas student. Doctoral students should complete designated curriculum study and research work, which is necessary for you to be qualified to apply for a doctoral degree. This program awards Ph.D degree in “Engineering”.

3. Research Field

The research areas include: civil engineering materials, polymer materials (including composite materials), inorganic materials (including metal, inorganic nonmetal).

1.The civil engineering materials includes civil engineering structure materials, civil engineering functional materials, civil engineering energy saving materials, civil engineering ecological materials.

2.The polymer materials includes molecular self-assembly, biomedical polymer materials, photoelectric functional polymer materials, energy materials, polymer based nanocomposite materials, flame retardant and fire protection materials, porous materials, water treatment materials, shape memory materials, adhesives and coating materials, polymer materials, automotive functional materials.

3.The inorganic materials includes new energy materials and manufacturing (energy conversion and storage of materials, environmental protection materials, energy-saving materials), preparation and characterization of nano structure and atomic level precision materials (Carbyne and Graphdiyne), iron of functional materials and devices (ferroelectric and piezoelectric ceramic, ferroelectric and magnetic - photoelectric the coupling of multi-functional materials), service behavior research, new inorganic functional materials and new preparation technology and preparation of lightweight materials and transportation system (bio functional glass and ceramics, optical functional materials, functional materials, environmental information sensing materials etc.).

Qualified Applicants

Applicants should have the foundation of postgraduate study, have the ability to complete the postgraduate study tasks, and have the potential to engage in research, teaching or management practice in the future.

A qualified applicant should:

1. Non-Chinese citizen with good health;

2. have received a master's degree from an accredited institution or recognized equivalent;

3. have sufficient undergraduate education for doctoral study in the chosen field, applicants with relevant research experience are preferred.;

4. have qualified English proficiency. Those whose mother languages are other than English are required to provide official language test results as supporting materials: TOEFL(total score of 80 or above); or IELTS(total score of 6 or above)

II Application Support Documents

1. Diploma

Applicants graduated from academic institutes outside of China should hold a degree equivalent to a Chinese master's degree. The degree should be awarded by an internationally recognized academic institution. Equivalency is determined by International evaluators in the Graduate Admissions Office.

2. Transcripts

Original or notarized academic transcripts. If the academic transcripts are not in Chinese or English, the original notarized translated document must be submitted.

3. Evidence of English Proficiency

All applicants from non-English-speaking countries are required to submit official evidence of English proficiency. You may select either TOEFL or IELTS. The MOST RECENT score (taken during the past two years) must meet the minimum requirement. Applicants who fail to meet the minimum will not be admitted. In special cases, TOEFL or IELTS may be waived for those whose education environment is English or the contact advisor at Tongji University strongly acknowledges his/her English proficiency

4. Personal Statement

The Personal Statement is your opportunity to clearly establish professional interests and career objectives, and to state your reasons for pursuing your discipline of interest in school of materials science and engineering at Tongji University rather than other institutions. It should also discuss your background, including research and professional experience, unique aspects of your academic record, honors, memberships and extracurricular activities.

5. Recommendations

At least two recommendation letters from referees with full professorship or equivalent are required for review (one should be issued by the applicant's master thesis research advisor）. The referees are encouraged to give their personal impressions on the applicant's intellectual ability, attitude in research professional skills, personal characters, quality of previous work and potential for future productive scholarship.

* In addition to the above application materials, the university may require applicant to provide supplementary materials, depending on the circumstances. Application materials sent by email are unacceptable. The application fee is nonrefundable. Application documents will not be returned.

III Academic Requirements:

1.Credit Requirement

Doctoral students should obtain at least 20 credits , including 4 credits public courses, 4 credits major courses, at least 4 credits non-degree courses, and 8 credits on compulsory activity(Dissertation Proposal 1 credit, Code of Academic Integrity 1 credit, Tongji University Advanced Lectures for Graduate Students 2 credits, Interim Assessment 3 credits, Symposium on Periodical Result of Dissertation 1 credit).

Dissertation requirement 

1: Graduate students should complete their dissertations independently under the supervision of their tutors. In principle, theses the dissertation should be written in Chinese, but overseas students may write in English or other languages approved in advance by the Degree Evaluation Subcommittee and Graduate School, but they must attach to their dissertations detailed Chinese abstracts.

3.Degree conferred upon graduation: doctor of engineering

V Tuition, Financial Aid, Accommodation and Insurance Requirements

1. Tuition

Once the applicant has obtained the Chinese Government Scholarship or the Shanghai Government Scholarship and the Tongji University Scholarship, Tongji University will be exempt from the full tuition fee; the above two types of scholarships are not obtained, and the tuition fees are self-responsible.

3. Accommodation

Admitted students are eligible to apply for a student residence in Tongji University and will be exempt from their accommodation fees.

4. Insurance

Enrolled applicants should purchase a suitable insurance. If the insurance is not included in the scholarship, the insurance will be borne by the applicant. If the applicant decides to attend Tongji University, please purchase insurance as soon as possible to avoid delay in admission.

VI Enrollment

1) Keep track on your application process in the Apply Online System. Once you are admitted by Tongji University, the admission status will change. The admission notice and visa documents (JW202 Form) will be sent off in middle July.

2) Admitted applicants should bring their Passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW202) to the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China, and apply for a student visa (X visa). Students shall come to Tongji University for registration before the deadline indicated on the Admission Notice. The X visa holders must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days after arrival in China.
