BISU 2024 Joint Scholarship Programme in Translation and Interpreting (JSPTI)

I. Introduction to the Programme

The Ministry of Education’s Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) is pleased to announce the Joint Scholarship Programme in Translation and Interpreting (JSPTI). This programme aims to promote exchanges between China and foreign countries in language, culture, and translation education. JSPTI provides scholarships to outstanding nonChinese students who are currently pursuing graduate studies in translation and interpreting at Conférence Internationale Permanente d’Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes(CIUTI)-affiliated universities located outside of China. The scholarship opportunity enables them to continue their education either as joint degree or non-degree students at BISU. The primary objective of this programme is to cultivate a cohort of highly skilled translators and interpreters proficient in both their native language and Chinese, while also being equipped with extensive knowledge and a global outlook. JSPTI intends to admit a total of 20 students in 2024, with the programme duration ranging from 6 to 12 months.

II. Requirements for Application

1. Applicants must be under the age of 40 before September 1st, 2024, non-Chinese nationals and their mother tongue should not be Chinese. Additionally, applicants are required to hold an HSK 6 Certificate (180 or above) or possess equivalent language proficiency certificates.

2. Applicants must be postgraduate students enrolled in translation and interpreting programmes offered by CIUTI member schools located outside of China. Note: Applicants are advised to consult their own universities to determine whether they approve the application and acknowledge the credits or study experience obtained through the programme.

II. Scholarship Coverage and Standards

The Scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance premium.
Recipients will be provided with free and twin dormitory accommodation (Apartment C of Building No.2). For students who choose to live off-campus, they will receive a monthly or quarterly accommodation allowance after their application is approved by BISU. The allowance standard is RMB 700 per month.
Each recipient will be provided a monthly living allowance of RMB 3,000. Students enrolled for one semester will receive allowances for a period of 5 months, while those enrolled for an entire academic year will receive allowances for a period of 11 months.
Recipients must complete their enrollment within the designated time frame specified in the admission notice provided by BISU. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of the qualification for scholarship. Students who register on or before the 15th of the given month will receive the full living allowance, while those who register after the 15th will receive half the amount.
Recipients who are absent from China for personal reasons for more than 15 days during their studies (excluding winter and summer vacations) will not receive living allowances for the duration of their absence.
Recipients who voluntarily suspend their studies, quit school, or face disciplinary actions by BISU, they will not receive living allowances starting from the date of suspension, quitting, or receipt of the disciplinary notice.
The comprehensive medical insurance premium will be in accordance with the relevant regulations set by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China for international students studying in China. BISU will cover the insurance cost. The premium amount is RMB 400 per person for one semester and RMB 800 per person for a full academic year.

IV. Learning Resources

Those who participate in the programme will have access to a diverse range of translation and interpreting courses and practicing opportunities while studying in China. They will receive guidance from accomplished instructors and seasoned practitioners. Additionally, applicants will have opportunities to meet and interact with their peers, both Chinese and international. Upon completion of the programme, graduates will be given priority in accessing support from other projects within the China Studies Program. This includes opportunities such as the publication of translated works, further study in China, participation in international academic conferences, and internships in professional institutions.

V. Application documents (The following documents may be presented in Chinese or English)

A scanned copy of the photo page of the applicant’s passport.
A personal statement in Chinese (at least 800 Chinese characters, including a resume and a study plan).
A scanned copy of the HSK Examination Score Report or other materials which can prove your Chinese language proficiency.
A Registration/Enrollment Certificate at the applicant’s home university (If the original is not in Chinese or English, a notarized Chinese or English translation should be attached).
Student transcripts during undergraduate and postgraduate studies (If the original is not in Chinese or English, a notarized Chinese or English translation should be attached).
Two letters of recommendation from associate/full professors or experts with equivalent qualifications in related professional domains, one of whom shall come from the applicant’s department or school.
A certificate of no-crime record.
Physical examination record for foreigner.
Other supporting (optional) documents: Applicants for translation major may provide samples of translations from and into Chinese, attaching the ST and indicating its source, and the number of words per copy should be no more than 800 words (calculated by the number of words in the original language). Applicants opting for interpretation who possess prior experience in this field may provide relevant proof of their work experience.

VI. Selection Procedures

1. Spring Semester—2024

(1) 01/10/2023—15/11/2023: Online application on both CLES’s official website (http://www.chinese.cn/page/#/pcpage/new service) and BISU International Student Service System (http://apply.bisu.edu.cn/) with submitting relevant documents (see attachment 2 for application procedures).

(2) 16/11/2023—25/11/2023: Primary review and examination by BISU.

(3) 27/11/2023—08/12/2023: Review by the expert committee of CLEC.

(4) Starting from 15/12/2023: applicants can log in the official website to check the admission results. BISU will inform potential students by email.

(5) Applicants are required to follow Chinese institutions’ guidelines for travel and school admission processes in accordance with the requirements of BISU after receiving admission notice.

2. Fall Semester—2024

(1) 01/04/2024—15/05/2024: Registration on the official website and relevant documents upload .

(2) 16/05/2024—25/05/2024: Primary review and examination by BISU.

(3) 27/05/2024—10/06/2024: Review by the expert committee of CLEC

(4) Starting from 11/06/2024: applicants can log in the official website to check the admission results. BISU will inform potential students by email.

(5) Applicants are required to follow Chinese institutions’ guidelines for travel and school admission processes in accordance with the requirements of BISU after receiving admission notice.
