During the recent cultural activities held at Shanghai University and Shanghai Dianji University, international student showed great interest in the colorful Peking Opera facial masks.

The universities gave a detailed introduction of the traditional Chinese art and offered white masks for international students to paint.

The facial makeup used in Peking Opera stems from performances that can be traced back 1,400 years. Different colors of makeup as well as the various facial expressions represent different characters, personalities and the ultimate fate and destiny of the roles portrayed.

The students used their imaginations to create their facial masks. Some said they gained a better understanding of the traditional art as well as Peking Opera.
