Chinese and international students as well as teachers at Shanghai Ocean University worked together to plant trees during a campus activity on March 11.
The activity was held to mark China's 44th National Tree Planting Day, which fell on March 12. It also aims to increase awareness of ecological protection and encourage teamwork. The National Afforestation Committee of China called on all adults to plant three to five trees a year.
International students who took part in the activity said that their nations celebrate Tree Planting Day as well, but their dates differ from China's. Planting trees together is joyful in their opinion, and the activity is meaningful because tree-planting aids in environmental protection.
The international students also learned about a virtual tree planting project in the mobile payment app Alipay. The project rewards low-carbon acts such as renting a bike or taking the bus with "energy" to "water" virtual trees, and the organizers will plant one real tree in deserts for every virtual tree that grows up.
