Numerous universities and colleges in East China's Jiangsu province have launched new courses for emerging and interdisciplinary fields in the new semester this year, local media reported.
The move is aimed at fostering more applied talents for society.
This year, Southeast University started enrolling students to study in the new discipline of carbon neutrality and intelligent equipment.
The discipline involves 11 majors and covers five schools in the university. Students will study in subdivided majors after their sophomore years.
Southeast University is the first in China to enroll students in this discipline. The move to do so is expected to bolster efforts to achieve China's carbon neutrality goals.
Hohai University has also started offering a new major for smart water conservancy that combines traditional conservancy specialty with artificial intelligence. The new major will help develop interdisciplinary talents in the field of water conservancy.
A new major for smart agriculture that was set up by Yangzhou University this year has already been a hit among students. Students of this major will be provided with additional employment opportunities and get to cultivate practical skills during their studies.
The higher education authorities in Jiangsu are also paying extra attention to fields that are facing a severe shortage of talents. One such sector is emergency management. As such, Nanjing Tech University had earlier this year launched five new majors related to this field. The university now offers seven majors for emergency management.
