This spring brought an unparalleled opportunity as I, an international student at Beijing Foreign Studies University, embarked on a unique cultural journey to Urumqi, the heart of China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Over five enriching days, our exploration group delved into the region's captivating landscapes and the even more enchanting hospitality of its people, leaving us with lasting impressions and profound insights.
Museums: Gateways to Xinjiang's Past
Our itinerary included visits to the pivotal cultural repositories of the region—the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum and the Urumqi City Museum. These visits were not merely educational; they were a deep dive into the rich tapestry of Xinjiang's history and cultural evolution. At the Autonomous Region Museum, a knowledgeable guide walked us through the epoch of the Silk Road, highlighting artifacts like the "Five Stars Rise in the East" arm protector. This piece not only stood out as a stunning work of art but also symbolized the historical and cultural confluence that has characterized the region for centuries.
In contrast, the Urumqi City Museum offered a panoramic view of the city’s development through meticulously curated exhibitions. From Silk Road relics to everyday items of the Uyghur people, each artifact enriched our understanding of this vibrant region.

The Urban Canvas of Urumqi
The city of Urumqi itself was a revelation. On our fourth day, we ascended the modest elevations of Hongshan Park, which provided a spectacular vantage point over the sprawling city. This location, where the urban pulse meets the calm of nature, offered a moment of reflection on the dynamic balance between growth and tranquility.
Artistic Immersion at Xinjiang Education Institute
A particularly memorable part of our journey was the artistic session at the Xinjiang Education Institute, where we engaged in Chinese painting and ethnic minority dances. These hands-on activities did more than teach us new skills; they were a bridge to the soul of Xinjiang, allowing us to experience its cultural diversity firsthand. The warmth and openness of the students and faculty enriched this experience, transforming it into a heartfelt exchange beyond mere artistic endeavor.
A Warm Departure
Our cultural journey concluded at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, where the kindness of the airport staff was a fitting endnote to our travels. As we navigated our departures, they not only assisted us with typical inquiries but also went out of their way to recommend local halal dining options within the airport, ensuring our last moments in Xinjiang were as enriching as the days that preceded them.
This exploration was more than just a trip; it was a profound journey into the heart of Urumqi, revealing the essence of a phrase I now hold dear: "Xinjiang is beautiful, its people even more so." From the natural beauty and historical depth to the genuine warmth of its people, Urumqi is indeed a city that leaves a mark on the heart of every visitor.
